The Gospel and the Spirit Help You Stand Firm

The Lord does not leave his people without the strength to stand firm. All throughout the world he is speaking with his children as they study and read His Word and pray. As the things that cannot be shaken remain, the rest crumbles

all around, the children of God can remain encouraged by the Spirit of God ministering to the church throughout the world and forever.

2 Thessalonians 1:3–4 ESV “We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring.”

This is not ‘shrinking back’ language—faith, love, steadfastness and faith, enduring! The Thessalonian church knew what it was to contend with a prostituting religion on the back of a wicked government (cf. Acts 17:7–8 below).

Acts 17:6–8 ESV “And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things.”

The prostitute of Judaism was riding on the beast of Rome, and perhaps this foreshadows our day and the future days of others. The church must stand firm in such times.

So, some call it holding the line. Paul calls it standing firm. But it is not just for pastors and those leading churches, but for moms, mechanics, marines, children, and grandparents who are following Jesus. Stand firm. Endure. The things that can be shaken will fall. And that includes man-made laws and systems. If they don’t fall in our time, they will in another time. Our confidence is that the gospel will accomplish all that Jesus promised that it would in this world. It will leaven the world and grow. Glory be to God for the Spirit and the Gospel.
