Prayer Guide for Preaching
Based off Steve Lawson’s Talk “Pray for Your Study Time”
This guide for prayer may be used for Bible teachers and preachers, anyone preparing to teach the truth to others. I have adapted it and written a brief prayer under each heading. Soli Deo Gloria!
Adoration - Father, I am in awe that you have called me into ministry.
Submission - Father, my life is under the authority of your Word. May it be the ruling authority of my sermons.
Confession - I humble myself and confess my sin to you so I can be a pure vessel in your sight.
Illumination - God, open my eyes that I may behold the truth of this text of Scripture (Psalm 119:18). I need the Holy Spirit to open my eyes to the truth of Scripture, to shine light on theis passage, and that you yourself would teach me (John 6:45).
Concentration - God, enable me to narrow my focus, block out distractions competing for my focus, give me a myopic (tunnel vision) for this passage.
Acceleration - God, accelerate the mind you have given me so that I come to the knowledge of the truth of this passage in a way that I am not sluggish, slow, in low gear to understand the text. Increase O Lord the process of me getting into this passage of Scripture.
Precision - Please enable me to be precise in rightly dividing the Word of Truth (2 Tim 2:15). Help me come to grips with the authorial intent of this passage and be very precise in my understanding of it.
Application - God I want more than the right understanding and interpretation of this text, but by your Spirit, I want to show the practical relevance of this passage.
