Oh my soul, upon finishing John Bunyan’s book from the Puritan paperback series, titled: All Loves Excelling- we are so filled with the love of God- and left meditating on the fullness of what was written. One particular point made by the author was his in depth exploration of what it means that God’s love passeth knowledge.
“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Ephesians 3:19 KJV
The love of God is so high and mighty that human beings cannot fully know it. This was particularly good- oh my soul- for times when we have been harassed by Satan or his demons, for days when sin waited at the door for us and struck us down, or for days when our sinful flesh has been utterly sinful- then it is well for us- oh my soul- to think upon God’s love- and to think upon it being past our knowledge. On days where we can’t see it, nor could we conceive that there be any way possible that God could love wretches like us- then there is this love of God which passes what we are able to conceive, think and contemplate. So we can know there is love for us still- oh my soul- even when we do not perceive it.
Jesus died on the cross for the sins of His people- the ultimate demonstration of God’s love. This is an unchanging fact. To know this, even though this love cannot be fully known- yet just to be known at any level fills our souls to the full.
“For if Christ Jesus loves with a love that passeth knowledge, then saith the soul, that is thus in the dark, he may love me yet, for all I know, for I know that Jesus loves with a love that passeth knowledge; and therefore I will not utterly despond. Yea if Satan should attempt to question whether ever Christ Jesus will look upon me or no: the answer is, If I know the love that passeth knowledge. But Christ may look upon me, yea, and love, and save me too, for all I a poor sinner know, for Jesus loves with a love that passeth knowledge. If I be fallen into sin that lies hard upon me, and my conscience fears, that for this there is no forgiveness. The help for a stay from utter despair is at hand, but there may, say I, for Christ loves, with a love that passeth knowledge.” John Bunyan
This is cause for hope- oh my soul this is cause to sing the greatest praise we can muster and sing it to the One True Living God our Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, and press onward towards the mark.
